“The body was created to bring into the visible reality of the world the mystery hidden in God from all eternity, and thus to be a sign of it.”
Theology of the Body, 19 (February 20, 1980), 4, p. 187.

Theology of the Body is the teaching of Pope Saint John Paul II on the meaning of the human body, sexuality, love, and marriage. Through 129 catechetical addresses delivered between 1979 and 1984, the Pope developed a biblically rooted, holistic vision of the human person and a theology of love. At the heart of these teachings is a reflection on the “bodiliness” of the human person, which rebuilds a “proper anthropology” and lays the foundation for understanding issues related to marriage and family.

In the light of the mysteries of creation, redemption, and resurrection, the Pope guides us to discover how the body of man and woman—created in the image of God—expresses personal dignity and reveals the goodness of human love within God’s divine plan. Theology of the Body is not merely theoretical; it is also a pedagogical method that, in accordance with the Gospel, teaches us to live out the “spousal meaning of the body,” to realize a love of total self-giving, and to journey toward the happiness and fulfillment that God has planned for humanity from eternity.

This course uses the Chinese edition of Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body as its main text. This translation is based faithfully on the revised English edition and includes the introduction written by Professor Michael Waldstein, which offers insight into the philosophical and theological background of John Paul II's thought. Drawing from the original Polish manuscripts, Waldstein presents the comprehensive structure and profound vision behind the Pope’s teachings.

In the first semester, the course will follow “the words of Christ,” step by step exploring the core themes of the catecheses: the original state of humanity, the distortion of the body’s meaning through sin, the redemption of the body through Christ, the vocations of marriage and celibacy, and the ultimate fulfillment of the human person in the eschaton.

Theology of the Body is one of the most important theological legacies Pope John Paul II left to our time. It has been described as a “theological time bomb” whose profound impact is only beginning to unfold. May this course help more people come to a deeper understanding of God’s plan of love for humanity, so that every man and woman may live out their unique path of love, making it the core and hallmark of their lives. May they also bear courageous witness to the renewal of the world, especially by making Christian families the fountain of this renewal.
